The single most common misreading is the room. Players move up a tier believing the odds improve there. What actually happens is the minimum bet level rises, so every shot costs more, every multiplier pays more, and the ratio between them stays where the paytable put it.
The maths that switching cannot move
Behind the animation, every shot is resolved by the same certified random number generator that runs the studio's slots. A fish is not a health bar that you whittle down. When your shot reaches it, the server decides whether that shot converts, at odds tied to the fish's multiplier, and it decides independently of every shot you fired before.
That is why a boss fish that looks almost dead is nothing of the kind. Those figures ignore winnings, which is the point of them: they show the gross rate at which your stake is exposed, not your net result. A player at the mid level who thinks in terms of a two-hour evening is planning a session their balance cannot fund at that fire rate. Set the bet level from the time you want to play, not the other way round.
When switching is genuinely worth doing
- Switch down a bet level when a session is running long. It is the only lever that reliably extends your time on the table, and it costs you nothing in expectation.
- Switch to an area-effect weapon when the tank is full of small fish, because one shot resolving against several targets uses your ammo budget more efficiently.
